Is this it?

It’s common, it’s real, and it’s treatable.

You don’t have to wait it out. Many women spend years going from doctor to doctor with symptoms that seem unrelated before anyone mentions perimenopause.

Your periods may still be regular, or only a little different, and that can make it easy to miss. Because your hormones fluctuate during this stage, a single blood test can’t settle the question. Your symptoms, your age and your labs together give a far better answer.

Signs women often notice

  • Periods that change, become irregular or get heavier
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Waking at 3 a.m. and not getting back to sleep
  • Weight gain around the middle, without changing anything
  • Mood swings, anxiety or irritability
  • Brain fog
  • Low libido or vaginal dryness
How Dr. Gurrala treats it

A straight answer, then a plan that covers all of it.

  1. 1

He listens to the whole story

Your cycle, your sleep, your weight, your mood and your family history all matter. You will have time to explain what has been changing.

  2. 2

    Labs show where you are

Lab work looks at your hormones and thyroid, along with metabolic markers and nutrient levels that can cause similar symptoms.

  3. 3

    Hormone therapy, if it fits

If HRT is right for you, Dr. Gurrala explains your options, including bioidentical hormones, and why he recommends one over another. If it is not, he will explain what else can help.

  4. 4

Sleep, weight and mood are treated together

Your plan can include nutrition, strength training with Delos Fit and body composition scans, along with follow-up labs to keep treatment on track.

Questions

What patients ask Dr. Gurrala.

What is the average age for perimenopause?

Perimenopause most often starts in the mid-40s, though it can begin earlier or later, and it commonly lasts several years. Menopause itself arrives at about 51 on average in the US. At Delos Longevity in Sterling, Dr. Gurrala can review your symptoms and tell you whether this is what you are experiencing.

What are the signs I need HRT?

Hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, mood changes or vaginal dryness that affect your daily life are the usual reasons to consider it. HRT is a medical decision that depends on your history as well as your symptoms. Dr. Gurrala goes through this with you in person.

Will HRT help my weight?

HRT is not a weight-loss treatment, and it does not cause weight loss on its own. It may help indirectly by improving sleep and energy, and it may influence where your body stores fat. At Delos, weight is addressed directly through nutrition, strength training and, when appropriate, medical weight loss.

What is the best diet during perimenopause?

No single diet is best, but a good starting point is enough protein to protect muscle, plenty of fiber, and mostly whole foods, combined with strength training. Your labs and an InBody scan at Delos can show what your own plan should focus on.

Can I still get pregnant during perimenopause?

Yes. Until you have gone 12 months without a period, pregnancy is still possible. HRT is not contraception, so raise this with Dr. Gurrala when you talk about treatment.

Can’t I just wait it out?

You can, and some women do. But you don’t have to live with symptoms that are disrupting your sleep, your work or your relationships. A consultation will show you what your options are.

Important safety information about hormone therapy

Hormone therapy is not right for everyone. It may not be suitable if you have had breast cancer or another hormone-sensitive cancer, blood clots, a stroke, a heart attack, active liver disease, or unexplained vaginal bleeding, or if you may be pregnant.

Possible risks include blood clots, stroke, gallbladder disease and, with some regimens and longer use, breast cancer. Women who have a uterus and take estrogen generally also need a progestogen to protect the uterine lining. Risk depends on your age, your health, how long it has been since menopause, and the type, dose and route of treatment.

Common side effects include breast tenderness, bloating, headaches and irregular bleeding.

This is not a complete list. Treatment is prescribed only when clinically appropriate, after a medical evaluation, and is reviewed regularly. Individual results vary.

You don’t have to wait it out.
